Well now, you wanna know about them freight elevators, huh? I tell ya, they ain’t like them fancy things you see in them tall city buildings. These are for workin’, for movin’ stuff, big stuff, heavy stuff. You know, the kind of stuff that’d break your back if you tried to carry it up the stairs.
First off, you gotta think about how big it needs to be. I’m talkin’ dimensions, see? You gotta have enough room to get your stuff in there. We ain’t talkin’ little boxes here. We’re talkin’ maybe a tractor, or a whole bunch of them pallets stacked high. So, you need somethin’ tall, like maybe eight feet or so, maybe more. And wide, gotta be wide enough to get that tractor in, so six feet wide at least, maybe even wider. And deep, you know, from front to back, gotta be deep enough to hold everything. Five feet deep? Maybe more, depends on what you’re haulin’. So, we’re lookin’ at somethin’ like 8 feet high, 6 feet wide, and 5 feet deep, at least. That’s what I call a good size to start with.
Then there’s the speed. Now, these ain’t gonna win no races. They ain’t meant to. They’re for movin’ heavy stuff, not people. So, they go a bit slower, you see. Maybe, what, 150 feet a minute? That sounds about right. Not too fast, not too slow. Just enough to get the job done without shakin’ everything to pieces. And you gotta think about how far it needs to go. One floor? Two floors? Three floors? More? Most of the time, you’ll need it to go at least three floors, I reckon. That’s what most folks need, anyway.
- Big Size: Gotta fit all sorts of big stuff, like tractors and pallets.
- Not Too Fast: Speed ain’t the main thing, movin’ heavy stuff is.
- Goes Up High: Needs to reach at least a few floors.
Now, these freight elevators, they ain’t just for any ol’ building. You see ’em in factories, warehouses, big stores, places where they gotta move a lot of heavy stuff. And they gotta be strong, real strong. They’re carryin’ a lot of weight, you know. We ain’t talkin’ about a few people. We’re talkin’ thousands of pounds, maybe even tens of thousands! Some of them can even carry a whole dang truck! Can you believe that? A whole truck, inside an elevator! That’s some serious lifting power, I tell ya.
And they gotta be safe, too. You don’t want that thing breakin’ down when you got a load of somethin’ heavy in there. So, they gotta have strong walls, strong gates, and good brakes. And they gotta be built right, you know, by folks who know what they’re doin’. They gotta use good, strong steel, none of that flimsy stuff. 14-gauge steel, that’s what they use for them wall panels. And them gates, they gotta be specially reinforced, so they don’t buckle under the weight.
And let me tell you somethin’ else. There’s different kinds of these elevators, too. Some are just for movin’ stuff, and some are for movin’ stuff and people. The ones for people, they’re called service elevators. They ain’t as big or strong as the real freight elevators. And they don’t carry as much weight. Maybe 5000 pounds or so. But a freight elevator? That’s a whole different story. That can carry a whole lot more, like I said, maybe 100,000 pounds even. It just depends on how you spec it, how you order it up.
So, when you’re thinkin’ about gettin’ a freight elevator, you gotta think about all this stuff. How big, how fast, how far, how much weight, and what kinda stuff you’re gonna be movin’. You gotta get it right, you see, or you’ll end up with somethin’ that ain’t worth a lick. It’s all about gettin’ the right tool for the job. And making sure it’s safe and strong enough to handle whatever you throw at it.
In short, freight elevators are made for hauling heavy things, big and bulky. They’re not fast, but they’re strong and they gotta be safe. You gotta think about how big they need to be, how much weight they need to carry, and how far they need to go. It’s all about gettin’ the job done, simple as that.
And don’t go forgettin’ to look into them rules and regulations. There are folks who make sure these things are safe and up to code, ya know. You can’t just slap somethin’ together and call it an elevator. It’s gotta be done right, by the book, or you’ll be in a whole heap of trouble. So, before you go spendin’ your hard-earned money, you better make sure you’re doin’ it right.
So that’s the long and short of it, as best as I can tell ya. Freight elevators, they ain’t pretty, but they get the job done.
